Monte and Brenda Confer started Confer's Jewelers in 1977 in Potters Mills, PA. They purchased the business from Monte's father. They began as a watch and clock repair shop. Monte would do the repairs and Brenda would help the customers while she was taking care of their 3 daughters.
In 1985, they moved the business to Bellefonte where it currently is. They had $2500 in inventory, mostly gold filled and 10 karat jewelry when they opened on April Fool's Day. They grew little by little and hired someone part time to help.
As more customers became repeat customers and began referring their friends, they continued to grow. When Tiphanie, Monteca and Eliza Confer started high school, they worked part time at the store.
Tiphanie worked full time for 2 years after high school until she moved to Harrisburg with her husband.
Eliza Confer, the youngest daughter, manages the family's second business CO2 The Unique Boutique.
Monteca Confer decided she wanted to be a Physician's Assistant and began college. After a semester she realized that her passion was jewelry and the family business. She began working full time at Confer's in 1999. She is planning on continuing the business when her parent's retire.

Potters Mills—When most boys his age were dismantling old cars, Monty Confer, of this Centre County community, was taking apart old watches. Working beside his father in the family’s jewelry store here, he became proficient at taking apart watches, cleaning them, and reassembling them.
He became so interested in the process that he eventually decided to make it a career. He attended Bowman’s Technical School in Lancaster for two years to become a watch maker.
Students at the school proceeded at their own pace, learning each process, performing it to the satisfaction of the instructors, and then moving on to the next step. What Mr. Confer accomplished in two years some students spent four or five years trying to do.
